I can relate to your thoughts and ideas in this post. As a marketer I sometimes get frustrated by the lack of innovative thinking and creativity on the part of companies. Almost wish that they would just let my team & I go off and pursue truly great ideas, and results -- do the great work we can do, free of narrow thinking and project limitations. What a dream :) I try to remind myself that the reason I'm sitting in those meetings is that these companies are seeking the innovation and creativity from me, even if they don't always do a good job of showing it by listening to my ideas. I continue to work on new ways to communicate the ideal ideation and strategic thinking process with companies. To be honest, I tend to find most of my inspiration (and motivation) in my colleagues and others in the industry. But when you do find those great clients, and projects that really inspire, the kind of projects you're willing to work non-stop on and probably for free (although we don't want to publicize that), well, it's simply heaven.

Sadly, most companies are followers, and not trail-blazers. I guess that's why we pursue other outlets for our strategic thinking and creativity through pro-bono work, blogs, even professional organizations.
