Earning social capital

Barter points, cacoa beans, gold, sheep. There have been many units used as currency in trade.

Now a new, or renowed one, is brought under attention again: The whuffie. A currency based on reputation. First used in a fiction novel in 2003, in 2009 introduced by Tara Hunt in her book The Whuffie Factor

Because whuffie’s are based on reputation, we now might be all rich! As we have showed our best self during the holidays: having shared, listened, given etc. We’re wealthy.

Hunt relates the whuffie currency to social networks. It is about social capital and based on how you contribute to another person’s life. How nice, networked and notable you are. Thus how much joy you bring into the world. Lovely thought! The only problem is that the public opinion determines the value. That is a lot of faith in people’s thoughts.

Find out for yourself if might want to start collecting whuffie points.
