Yesterday I was in Eindhoven at the Dutch Design Week, attending a full day program of lectures in the morning and a workshop in the afternoon. Theme of the day: Sustainable innovation. And although I picked up quite some things about biodegradable versus biobased plastics, starch-based polymers vs. PLA plastics, etc. the overall feeling was that I wasted my time.

Just like Rik quoted Erik in this post, it was the same story all over. The lectures consisted of blokes on stage one-waying their wisdom towards the public. And although there was an interactive workshop in the afternoon, this was even worse. My group consisted of two other guys with whom I followed a step by step program, killing creativity instead of unleashing it.

What was left were the drinks. In about an hour I had to make up for the day. Running around talking to interesting people I tried to make up for the loss of time. But even I am only human and the feeling of failure took possession of me. And it’s just such a shame. These product innovation companies managed to bring together all these professionals, and all they come up with is lectures and a workshop. Come on, be a little more innovative yourself!

A few months ago I started a strategic design office, Koos. And although we’re extremely busy with our acquisition, I know at some point, we will organize a nice little event. But I can guarantee that we will come up with a new and exciting format (and of course I will post on KG when the time is ready). My next essay – expect it at the beginning of November – will tell a little more about my startup Koos, so stay tuned!
